Grab Some Nod in the Pod Hotel

New York, New York, it's a helluva town, hotel rates are up, and my budget is down. Which is why New York hasn't been on my travel itinerary for the last couple of years. However, my plans may change, now that there's a Pod in town.

The Pod Hotel, corner of 51st Street and Second Avenue, has risen out of the old Pickwick Arms. For as little as $89 a night (depending upon when you go), you get a clean, albeit tiny room equipped with an LCD TV, presumably because they couldn't squeeze a human being and a tube TV into such a small space. You also get free Wi-Fi and--but of course--a stereo/alarm clock iPod docking station. Some rooms come with bunk beds; each bed is equipped with its own TV, with jacks for headphones. This means you can watch Bikini Pool Party while your bud in the bunk above is enraptured by Masterpiece Theatre, and neither of you will be the wiser.

There are larger rooms, such as the Queen shown at left, but they go for about $229 or so. Still, with the average NYC hotel room costing $240 per night in 2006 (according to PricewaterhouseCoopers), you'll have a little extra cash left to blow at Bloomie's.

Nice article. I was wondering if you could help me out? I have now started planning to visit New York and have been looking at some hotel reviews (in the link http://www.expedia.co.uk/destinations/north%20america/united%20states/New%20York.aspx). They are quite useful but some mixed thoughts. Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay near the center? Thanks Chris

I've always been a fan of hotel rooms with fancy gadgets in them, haha. I guess I'm just a sucker for toys. Last time I was in New York, Easy Click Travel managed to book me in a hotel with an LCD TV, a DVD played with an option to rent movies as part of the room service, and one of the hotel clerks even managed to procure an X-Box 360 I used for the night! It was awesome! I'd pay $89 for that any day of the week.
